We Scout – come join the adventure!
Join the Scout Movement in Watford North, either as a young person or an adult volunteer. Being a Scout gives you the chance to get stuck into loads of activities you wouldn’t normally get to do.
Chief Scout Bear Grylls says life is about grabbing opportunities! We agree! Above everything else, Scouting is all about enjoying yourself, whatever you’re doing – and there’ll always be plenty to do!
Volunteering with us is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you. Whether you help out once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, we’ll make sure you’re properly trained and supported.
FAQs
General Questions
1. Do I need any previous Scouting experience to volunteer?
No! Most volunteers start with no prior experience, and full support and training are provided. You just need enthusiasm and a willingness to help young people grow.
2. How much time do I need to commit?
It depends on the role. Some volunteers help weekly, others fortnightly or monthly, and some assist on a flexible or rota basis. Even an hour here and there makes a difference.
3. What roles are available?
There’s a variety of roles, including:
- Helping at meetings (games, activities, supervision)
- Admin support (managing emails, organising events)
- Behind-the-scenes support (fundraising, maintaining equipment, social media)
- Leadership roles (running sessions with full training and guidance)
4. Will I have to run sessions on my own?
No. You’ll be part of a team, and there will always be experienced volunteers to support you. We also provide activity plans to make things easier.
5. What if I can’t commit every week?
That’s completely fine! Many volunteers share responsibilities or help occasionally when they’re available.
6. What if I don’t have that much spare time?
Volunteering with us is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you. Whether you help once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, we’ll make sure you’re properly trained and supported.
7. Do I have to volunteer at the section my child is at?
No, not at all. We have 6 sections in Scouting – Squirrels (4-6), Beavers (6-8), Cubs (8-10.5), Scouts (10.5-14), Explorers (14-18), Network (18-25). We also co-own a Scout Campsite in Chandlers Cross where they welcome volunteers as well.
Training, Support & Requirements
8. Is there training available?
Yes! The training is designed to be easy and flexible, with short online modules covering everything you need to know. You’ll also have experienced leaders to guide you.
9. Will I need a background check (DBS)?
Yes. To ensure the safety of young people, all volunteers working directly with children need a free Enhanced DBS check, which we arrange for you.
10. Do I need any special skills?
No special skills are required, but if you have hobbies or experience (crafts, sports, music, DIY, IT), we’d love to make use of them!
11. What age do I need to be to volunteer?
Anyone aged 14+ can help, with different roles available for young leaders, parents, and adults.
Benefits of Volunteering
12. What do I get out of volunteering?
- A chance to make a difference in young people’s lives
- New skills and qualifications (teamwork, leadership, first aid)
- A great social experience with other volunteers
- Seeing your own child enjoy Scouts firsthand
- A rewarding and fun experience!
13. Can volunteering help with my career?
Absolutely! Many employers value the skills gained in Scouting, including leadership, teamwork, organisation, and communication. Plus, you can bring any skills you learned in work, to Scouts.
14. What if I try it and decide it’s not for me?
That’s fine! There’s no pressure to stay if it’s not the right fit, but most people enjoy it more than they expect once they give it a try.
